Tulip

Euro Saarinen's Tulip chair was designed in 1955 for Knoll (of course - I often feel like all the best iconic pieces are manufactured by Knoll!). The chairs smooth lines and futuristic look is considered a classic of industrial design.

There are two really cool pieces of trivia regarding this phenomenal piece of furniture. One, is that in a 1956 cover story in Time magazine, Saarinen announced that he was designing a collection to "clear up the slum legs un the U.S. home." He later completed the Tulip collection, including the iconic table, by creating a cast aluminum base inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. The second cool piece of trivia is that the chair's popularity soared when it appeared on the "U.S.S. Enterprise" ship on Star Trek in the 1960's.

Chalk it Up!

While some people may be over the chalkboard wall, I still get excited to see one if it is done well. Especially for a home with children, a chalkboard wall can be a great source of communication and inspiration for the family. It also looks super cool ;-)

Chalkboard walls are a really easy DIY project. You can simply get black or green chalkboard paint at any local paint store. It may be called "table tennis paint." To add more fun to your wall just add a magnetic primer underneath the paint, thus making your wall writeable and magnetic!

Or, if you want to be a little more fun, check out Hudson Paint which sells chalkboard paint in amazing vibrant colors. Look how great this mom used Hudson paint to keep track of her family's whereabouts.

Mirror Mirror on the ..... Floor?

One of my most beloved accessories are floor standing mirrors. I especially love extra large ones in bedrooms and living areas. They add so much depth to the room and like many great interior design accessories, floor mirrors feel like a piece of art.

I have had clients who were ambivalent about floor mirrors. They felt it looked unfinished - as if the mirrors were sitting on the floor waiting to be hung on the wall. However, once I show them a beautiful medley of images portraying floor standing mirrors, they quickly change their mind.

This mirror is amazing! The juxtaposition between the traditional design of the frame coupled with the bright colors and the haphazard way it is painted is phenomenal.

Union Jack

I seem to be noticing more and more the Union Jack all throughout interior design. Whether it is a pillow, a piece of art or the fabric on a chair, it seems to be everywhere. Maybe it has always been around and I never paid much attention? However, lately I feel as if it is way more prevalent than our flag.

I actually think it is really cool and was wondering if it would be odd to have something "Union Jack" in my home, considering there is nothing remotely British about me or my family.

Random

Designed by Bertjan Pot in 2001 and introduced to the Moooi collection in 2002, the Random Light is definitely on its way to becoming a classic.

The fixture is formed from resin drained yarn that is randomly coiled around an inflatable mold, creating a magic translucent 3D fabric. The body is one piece, with a small opening at the top providing access to the bulb.

The Random Light is available in three different sizes and can be utilized in numerous settings. This fixture has been displayed in both commercial and residential spaces creating a modern design aesthetic with a soft almost magical feeling. I have seen a room displaying a single Random pendant to hallways that boast different sizes hanging at varying lengths.

Not only does this fixture feel like a piece of art, but the webbed feature also casts amazing shadows on the walls adding an entirely new dimension to this pendant.
