Mid Century Modern Design

A reader recently requested some mid-century modern design ideas.  I was actually quite excited to receive this request as it happens to be one of my favorite periods.

For those of you who do not know, this period is generally considered the time between the 1930's through the mid 1960's and is known for its affinity for clean, simple lines, neutral colors, and minimalist atrributes.  It is actually the design concept I adhere to most, especially when it comes to uncluttered spaces (the only way I could sleep at night with three kids!).

Many well known designers of this time include the uber famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright as well as furniture designers, Harry Bertoia, Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobsen, George Nelson, Euro Saarinen and Richard Schultz.

In 1961 Playboy magazine published a now classic image of six mid-century design masters all sitting in chairs that they created.  As far as mid-century design enthusiasts are concerned, this is a legendary photograph.

George Nelson, Edward Wormley, Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia, Charles Eames and Jens Risom Playboy Magazine, July 1961.

Here are some images of rooms that incorporate mid century design pieces...

Series 7 Chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen

This is my LOVE - Platner Arm Chair designed by William Platner for Knoll

Swan Sofa designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen

Could the sofa look any cuter in this boy's bedroom?  I really love the placement of it at the foot of the bed.

Eames Aluminum Lounge Chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller

Bertoia Diamond Lounge Chair designed by Harry Bertoia for Knoll (the metal chair with the aqua seat pad in the corner)

Eames Plastic Armchair - wire base designed by Charles and Ray Eames for Heman Miller

This black and white mural is so sweet and fun and something so unexpected for a living room.  Love the pink accents!

Egg Chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen (the blue and white patterned chair)

Shell Chair designed by Hans J. Wegner

On another note, I am in love with this rug.  Multi-color stripes is another one of my obsessions.

Shearling Swan Chair designed by Arne Jacobsen for  Fritz Hansen

Aarnio Ball Chair by Vitra

How beautiful is the black  accented against the all white room?!!!

Bertoia Barstool by Harry Bertoia for Knoll
Kitchen design by Palmer Weiss

Love the yellow accents in this kitchen.  Doesn't yellow put you in a cheerful mood?

I love the design of this banquet with the walnut millwork and the white leather upholstery.  The fact that is is situated right under the huge window only adds to the allure.

  3. Great post. You can find nearly every furniture item listed here on Emfurn. I was on their site a few moments ago and thinking of ordering an eames lounge chair.
